We Applaud You,

Urban Mondays!!!

ub 1www.urbanmondays.com

“We’re all a little too familiar with having a “case of the Mondays,” maybe even on other days of the week. Despite it all, being fresh is a lifestyle, even on that first day after your glorious weekend comes to an end. Dressing up or looking your best isn’t about going out to an event or meeting for dinner, it’s about looking good and being effortlessly fly on a regular basis. With Urban Mondays’ hand crafted bow ties and denim jackets, you can do just that.”

What was the moment you realized this was a part of you and it had to be done?

It actually started with a purchase that I made from one of my favorite retailers. I bought a denim jacket with sweater sleeves, and after admiring it for so long, I came to the conclusion that I could make something almost exactly the same on my own. After producing about three jackets, I knew that this was something that I could make for myself and others and potentially make a small profit!

www.urbanmondays.com

What made you turn the idea for the business into a finished product?

After the jackets, I began making bow ties. My boyfriend had a ton of ties that were too wide, so I taught myself how to turn them into pre-tied bow ties. He wore a few of them to work, and within a week I had about five orders. I knew then that I should start a small business concept, where I could market my items through social media and make some money on the side.

What personal developments lead to your business?

Having a strong work ethic is the best thing that I can bring to my business. I work 10-12 hours a day, but when I come home, I switch gears and work to execute the best possible products for my customers. I make sure to uphold all timelines given, and meet as many of the needs of my customers as I possibly can. I never stop until the job is done and that has lead to a strong following of people who trust in the brand.

What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

Keeping positive people close to me is what keeps me the most motivated. That type of support is never less than expected. My mother and my boyfriend are constant supporters; their optimistic viewpoints keep me pushing. Without them, I wouldn’t have gotten this far!

Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

My SheRo is, has always been, and will always be my mother. She is tenacious, loving, selfless, patient, beautiful, strong, wise, nurturing. Those things come natural for her, but they are things that I constantly must work on and strive towards.

What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

My greatest success has simply been getting the business off of the ground and making sales. I went to school for culinary, so being able to develop a fashion business and bring in customers who love my products is a big accomplishment for me.

How have you made a difference in the lives of others?

That’s hard to say! But I think the biggest thing is being a role model and motivator to those who are afraid or apprehensive about following their dreams. Many are daunted by the idea of straying away from what they went to college for; others are unsure about taking their ideas to the next level and actually putting them into affect. I just woke up one day and did it. Taking risks is the only way to make things happen, and if I can inspire just one person to take a small risk then I have done what I came to do!

What mark do you want to leave on the world?

I just want to be able to get people thinking outside of the box, especially when it comes to fashion, but also in other aspects of their life. I am extremely open minded, and I love when I can get people to think in different ways than they typically would. If more of the world were a little more liberal on a lot of issues, we would be way more progressive than we currently are. If I can expose just a few people to wider arrays of thinking, and they can do the same for another person, then the world will ultimately be a better place.

Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

Let’s just say, I want to be successful.

Kool’s Bazaar!!!

www.koolsbazaar.com

Pure genius. Eclectic music for your soul. An unforgettable experience. Lyrics that challenge your perspective, thought-provoking rhymes. Kool’s Bazaar pulls you into another world. Get ready, they will be coming to a stage near you very soon…

What was the moment you realized this was a part of you and it had to be done?

As artists, we are always pregnant with creativity and if we don’t push  and give birth to it, we will surely die inside. I think it is the  creators way of making sure that we don’t waste our gift. When you are  an  artist,  there is a little light planted inside of you at  conception, that is subsequently cultivated over a period of time. The  build up of creative energy inside of you at any given moment, is the  indicator that something MUST be done. Thus we give birth and create new life through our music, songs, ect…

What made you turn the idea for the business into a finished product?

As an undergraduate student majoring in Music Technology at Ball State  University (BSU), Rich (Kb’s Music Director) composed primarily  instrumental music for acoustic instruments. Realizing the need for  players to give birth to his compositions, he assembled the band ‘Acoustic Red’. Acoustic Red became  the catalyst for the vision of  Kool’s Bazaar. Wanting to combine his love for hip-hop, jazz, neo-soul  and electronic music, Rich created and assembled the collective ‘Kool’s  Bazaar.’

What personal developments lead to your business?

During undergraduate study at BSU, Rich made the transition from percussion to piano. As a result, the dynamics of his compositional skills were  maximized and his interest in making music for ensembles versus solo  instruments grew. At that moment, he realized the way only to bring his  vision into fruition was to create a musical collective comprised of  multi-instrumentalists, a lyricist and vocalist.

What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

There is an internal sense of self that drives most artist ( that i  know). An understanding that if we don’t/can’t create, we can become  irritable, emotionally ill, feel depleted. The only cure is too create. << That alone… drives many. Drives me.

www.koolsbazaar.com

Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

Naz ( vocalist/emcee/poet/songwriter): Ultimately, Nina Simone. She was the ‘Antistar’ of her time!

Rich (composer/pianist): Miles Davis. His ability to transcend musical genres and pioneer  others is second to none.

Jesse (bassist):  Robert Glasper and Live Experiment

Joe ( drummer): Stanley Clarke Band

What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

Having an audience of folks that know our songs VERBATIM and opening for a number of national recording artists.

How have you made a difference in the lives of others?

Kool’s Bazaar creates music that honors people, points out the ridiculousness  of societal norms; we remind people that its ok to be unique without social retribution. Through our music, we remove the mask and  speak from a real and honest place that most people can relate to.

What mark do you want to leave on the world?

Kool’s Bazaar wants to create a paradigm shift in the way that ppl think  about, approach , and listen to music. We want people to be more  intentional about listening to music… we want to  successfully  move  our listeners beyond passive listening, to active engagement through  analysis of song meaning and musical composition. In short, we want our  listeners to  become so musically savvy and astute,  that they actively  reject commercially created,  (Soda) pop music!! We want to be their  musical vitamin D! I Think that may be the goal of MOST Indie artist  though, LOL!

Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

In 5 years, Kool’s Bazaar would like to be a successful internationally touring band with management.

We Applaud You,

Solo Noir!!!

www.solonoir.com

Ms. Andrea Polk, Owner of Solo Noir for Men shares her journ3y to becoming a confident business woman by overcoming obstacles and allowing failure to be her strongest motivator.

1.       What is the name of your business?

Solo Noir is a complete grooming line for ethnic men featuring 100% organic 2-in-1 grooming products to make grooming simple. For years the male ethnic skin care market has been overlooked and Solo Noir is the solution to the markets void.  We formulate organic skin care products that help moisturize the skin, assist in the prevention of ingrown hairs, soften course facial hair, and promote smooth skin. We offer unique skin care products that do not create a dependency on usage like most chemical skin care products in the industry. We focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle for our consumers while providing them with the products and tools to do so.

Solo Noir isn’t just a skin care product it’s a lifestyle. I challenge you to create your own “Definition of a Man” by using Solo Noir for men grooming products.

2.       What was the moment you realized this was a part of you and it had to be done?

When I failed at my first attempt to business ownership, and during my hiatus all I could think about was the business and how I gave up.  When I began pursuing Solo Noir things began to fall into place from me finding a manufacturer, to building a strong team, to finally getting the confidence to stand proud and trust in my vision.  Solo Noir was something that was meant to be and it has always been a part of my life.  Everything I have done in the past has placed me in this very position as the Owner of this company.  When I studied at Tennessee State University I had no idea how I would utilize my talents but little did I know God had a plan for my future, he directed me into a Marketing Degree, a Master’s in Supply Chain Management, and now a Degree in Aesthetics, all which are great foundations for being an owner of a skin care line.

www.solonoir.com

3.       What made you turn the idea for the business into a finished product?

The thought of not pursuing my passion and not following God’s plan for me urged me to put things in order.  An idea is just a thought, but will never come to fruition without action or effort. Do you know the difference between a millionaire and dreamer? The difference is a millionaire puts in effort and utilizes their resources to become successful, while a dreamer has an idea or vision but never puts fourth effort to pursue their dream.

4.       What personal developments lead to your business?

Being confident, overcoming my weaknesses of public speaking, feeling uninspired and lacking initial support from others. Once I overcame the things that held me back I begin to make progress with Solo Noir. The more confident I felt the more motivated and successful I became.

5.       What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

What keeps me motivated is knowing that this is what God has planned for me as well as knowing that as I pursue my passion obstacles will occur.   My biggest obstacle is myself so in this journey of success I need to utilize my resources and stay motivated because failure is not an option.

6.      Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

My SheRo is my mom (I’m sure most people would say that) she is my SheRo because she instilled in me a strong sense of work ethic. As a single mom she worked countless hours to provide  a good lifestyle.  Her strong sense of money management taught me the importance and the value of a dollar, her wisdom gave her the insight to set aside money when I was born to pay my college tuition. So I would say my mom is my SheRo for providing me the platform for growth and creativity.

www.solonoir.com

7.       What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

My biggest success to date I would say would be building a strong team, a team that brings expertise in different fields, and whom are dedicated to building the Solo Noir brand and creating their own success.  Your business is as strong as your weakest link and I pride myself and offering this platform to allow my team to build off their weaknesses and be creative in our efforts to capture the ethnic grooming market.

8.       How have you made a difference in the lives of others?

I strive to make a difference in the lives of others every day, through providing the Solo Noir platform to launch others careers and positioning the brand so that I can continue to offer a platform for others to utilize their talents toward.

We utilize our social media outlets to educate and inform men on proper grooming and lifestyle techniques.  In our efforts to emphasize empowerment in our consumers, we have named all our products after positive attributes of men: DAPPER a 2-in-1 Facial Wash/Toner, REFINED a 2-in-1 Facial Buff/Cleanse, SMOOTH a Skin Conditioner/Skin Smoother, BRAVE an Aftershave/Toner, and SLEEK a Pre-Shave/Shave Cream.

www.solonoir.com

9.       What mark do you want to leave on the world?

I want to leave the mark of pursuing my dreams and overcoming obstacles, and when I am long gone I will have instilled great work ethic in the people around me and my offspring.  Empowering them to step out on faith and make your dreams a reality.

10.  Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

In 5 years I would like to see Solo Noir thriving, I can see myself in a large department store and planning to open a Brick & Mortar Solo Noir Grooming Lounge.  I also can see myself on the way to changing the way ethnic men view skin care and skin care products.

Alive on Purpose!!!

imaliveonpurpose.com

Founder of Alive on Purpose LaToyia Jones was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from the University of Phoenix with a degree in Organizational Psychology in Business Management and plans on continuing her education with a Master Degree in Child and Family Counseling.

Being a bi-product of the adoptive and social service systems she quickly found a connection to help address issues of youth development, child abandonment, and the healing of mother and father wounds. Her mission became simple to help heal the hurting and she would accomplish this task by any means necessary. As a licensed Grief Recovery Specialist and group facilitator she teaches classes throughout the city to help both adult and teens bridge the connection between their past experiences in order to find the proper completion to move forward with their lives.

imaliveonpurpose.com

She is currently working on major projects including the cultivation of Alive on Purpose, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to transform teens and adults through the tearing down of old ideas and beliefs in order to rebuild hope and purpose through knowledge, awareness, and healing.

In addition her recent developments include the partnerships with other organizations to provide mentoring, workshops, small groups, & events to service woman and organizations across the U.S including but not limited to: churches/ministries, organizations, and group homes.

She is also in the process of completing her first book entitled From Pain to Purpose that challenges all readers to step outside of themselves and to look and where they came from in order to better understand the path on which they are going.

LaToyia is inspired each day through the word of God and prays that His inspiration be the focus and the direction of her life. She lives her life by the scripture “I am willing to be used of the Lord. Let it happen to me as you have said’ Luke 1:38

What was the moment you realized this was a part

of you and it had to be done?

The moment when I realized that this mission was a part of me was when I first had to experience the mission statement in my own life. Alive on Purpose was first my story. It was the story of me traveling through low self-esteem and a high level of rejection living each day as if I did not matter to the world. Experiencing a transition in parenting at a young age due to an adoption process, left me hopeless while successful.

Things around me looked great, but my confidence level and my commitment to my life overall were not present. I didn’t feel valuable, I didn’t feel accepted. Alive on Purpose spoke to me first as it transformed my way of thinking even about my own life. It encouraged me to understand my purpose and know that even though my life often didn’t make sense, it was no reflection on God’s intent for my creation. There was a plan for my life, when I accepted this I was then shown the hundreds of people who needed to know this also.

imaliveonpurpose.com

What made you turn the idea for the business into a finished product?

The need of the community really made this need come alive.I once had a dream that I was standing in a line helping people that are personally assigned to me.  They were actually waiting for me (as imperfect as I was/am) to survive. When I grasped this concept holistically, I knew that I had no other choice. That was just a glimpse into what God had already spoke and  it was  time for me to align myself with His vision.  I realized that my life was bigger than what I could  ever imagine.

What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

My struggles, my fears, my insecurities all become so irrelevant when you realize that people are assigned to you. When I cannot stand up for myself and push forward on my own they push me. Each person whether I have met them or not cause me to live each day Alive and do my best to push forward so that if I have not met them yet we will cross paths because I decided to stay on my course and remain motivated.

Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

When I think about someone who could be my hero I think about all the men and women who are silently living Alive on Purpose. They have pressed through struggles, trials, and situations that almost killed them in order to seek what was going to give them “more” out of life;  life that was filled with God’s course and plan taking over and being their guide. I am just a representation of all the men and women who do this everyday. Everyday people overcome. Everyday people win. Everyday people choose to be greater than their circumstances and everyday people like you and I choose to be greater than the box that the world has tried to confine us in. In my life these are my parents, mentors, family and friends.

What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

Our greatest success was taking our organization higher, and removing ourselves as a team from the driver’s seat. Many great people have recently answered the assignment to be apart of the team and without little instruction have taken the limits off of what we can accomplish. The creation of our social media campaigns, t-shirts of expression, and dynamic workshops have been a great addition to the work that we will accomplish this year. Each time that we step outside the box we allow lives to be changed at a greater level.

imaliveonpurpose.com

How have you made a difference in the lives of others?

We are currently making a difference in the lives of others by going to a place where others are often afraid to go. I believe that pain + passion=purpose. With this formula that I first heard on TD Jakes’ Live On Purpose series it inspired me to do just that, help people to deal with the pain. One of the scariest things to do is to revisit experiences in your life, especially the ones that caused pain, hurt and often times defeat. However, it’s those experiences that help cultivate purpose and prepare and mold the person that God created. The moments that we are most proud of are the stories of the men and women who use to be in bondage to their past who have shifted their perspective and now understand the “why” behind the occurrences that once caused them pain. The stories of men and women who believed that suicide was the only way of escape who now know with full confidence that the same life is worth living. We are most proud of the impact and transformation that those connected to our organization have made: the decision to live in spite of every situation that was thrown their way.

What mark do you want to leave on the world?

My/Our mission is for everyone live to know that there life is not a mistake and they were put here on this earth intentionally. I want people to be able to have access to programs, tools, and resources that enable them to discover this at the earliest stage possible. A person should not have to live their entire life without a true identity nor should they want to. The mark that I want to leave is simple but yet so complex – everyone who has breath in their body should know that they are Alive On Purpose.

imaliveonpurpose.com

Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

This is a loaded question! We see Alive On Purpose operating in more than just a couple of states and  globally impacting this nation! Youth centers, books, counseling, conferences and seminars are just a glimpse of what we are set out to accomplish. With your support and your encouragement we will be compelled to accomplish it all.

Alive on Purpose is more than just a workshop title or a name of a newsletter. Alive on Purpose is essentially the description of who we are, and who we are destined to become. We all have traveled through some of the roughest experiences in our lives. In these experiences we have directly been taught the importance of support. For me these workshops and newsletters speak volumes and have the ability to meet you as a teen and or adult right where you are, no matter what the experience may be presenting. Why? It’s simply because I caught the message that was being sent to me all my life. This is the same message that I want you to catch, which says you are “ALIVE ON PURPOSE ” and that there is truly a plan for your life. I am here not only to encourage you but to help you achieve that discovery that lies inside of you, a discovery that makes everything make sense. It’s the reason why you are here. It’s called your PURPOSE!”

 imARTificial.com

From a creative mind fueled by the inner drive to never become too comfortable came the creation that is called ARTificial!

Welcome to the creative world of Ms. Sabrina Boyett!

Rock a look that is all your own with ARTificial. Reconstructed denim, jewelry and all things art from Ms. Boyett’s perspective!

“ARTificial focuses on what I find pleasing in a visual, musical, or written form. Anywhere from graffiti, a song from the 70′s, a poem, ANYTHING. This is about the art of life. So many people just think of art as the Mona Lisa; I want people to expand their horizon and think outside of the box when it comes to art, see the bigger picture of it all.”

The ARTificial blog will showcase what appeals to her  artistically.  The ARTificial store will showcase jewelry that she has made, and denim that she has reconstructed.
“Art is all around us; it’s more than a pretty picture!”

Her fashion tips include take risks, mix prints and patterns, .and create a new look using old pieces of clothing in your closet. Revamp your closet; spice up your look with ARTificial.

imARTificial.com

Don’t let the name fool you, there’s nothing artificial about it. Its a play on words.    ARTificial … with ART being the most important element.
Ms. Sabrina Boyett is  a creative, free spirited individual. She knew when she was 17 that she wasn’t cut out for the typical 9-5 job, answering to people for the rest of her life. Bored out of her mind at her 9-5, she started implementing ideas for imARTificial.com. Her art was destined to be seen… She finds beauty in uncommon pieces.
Sabrina says that most of the things that she makes, she also wears. Often times people always ask her where she gets her clothing items  from, so she decided to provide her unique jewelry and reconstructed denim.
“If people are willing to support, I am willing to provide.
Sabrina  likes creating things, and she  likes to see people looking their best.  Words from the artistic diva, “If I could re-vamp wardrobes I would. I stay motivated because I feel like people NEED cute things to face the world in. That, and the fact that I’d prefer to work for myself and if this takes a major turn, I won’t have to continue working this 9-5 that I dread!
My SheRo & HeRo would definitely have to be my parents. The provided a solid ground and gave me the freedom to  be and do what I wanted. Besides my parents, my SheRo or HeRo is anyone who stays true to themselves, and expresses themselves without the worry of judgment. I love those people!”
imARTificial.com just launched July 1st  and Sabrina received orders within 30 minutes of launching  the site! People  seemed to love the site.
I love that they love it, words by the fabulous Sabrina.
She offers her  creativity and fresh perspective. Showing others  that you can wear what you want. Be confident in your skin & let your clothes &  accessories adorn you.

imARTificial.com

“A lot of people say they can’t wear the things that I wear because they wouldn’t look right. I  tell them to put it on, and be confident. That’s what I do!”
When asked what mark she want to leave on the worlds she says, “Hey, I want to creatively change the world one wardrobe at a time!” In the next five years, she would  like imARTificial.com to become known to the masses. Eventually having a  storefront with the addition of  fashion consulting in the mix.
I’m open, whatever is thrown at me, I’ll take it and try to work with it. I just have to stay focused and see what happens!
♡ Sabrina

Shaunesi DeBerry-Melvin is the Founder of Women Wear Pants Too Inc. as well The Break the Cycle not the Love Movement.

WWPT, Inc is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization enriching the lives of Women, Single Mother’s & Domestic Violence Survivors. After a very nasty divorce from a highly notable international basketball player, Shaunesi decided to turn what was once her mess into her MESSage.

After visiting different therapist & doctors to help cope with the traumatic events experienced by the divorce and leading up to it, Shaunesi decided to take her life into her own hands and use her story to help others as well as help herself heal.

When asked what keeps Shaunesi motivated, she says instantly and proudly, HER DAUGHTERS, Madisen & Moriah.

Shaunesi’s Shero is Whitney Houston. A lot of people only saw the “troubled Whitney” Shaunesi saw a women fighting SO hard in society to attempt to control her pain while still smiling in the public eye & not even knowing how many people STILL looked to her for the strength she showed until her last days. In Whitney’s passing Shaunesi realized in herself it’s important to take back your life, whether you suffer from drugs, depression, abuse or anything else before its too late.

Thus far, Shaunesi’s greatest success is the overwhelming love and feedback from the community. The love and support let’s Shaunesi know that Women Wear Pants Too Inc. and The Break the Cycle not the Love Movement is something the community and world has been waiting for.

Shaunesi believes that because she has been able to give others a peek inside her life, just to let them know it’s okay to be down, as long as you can SEE a way up, you can get there again. This attitude has helped many women and men.

If Shaunesi could leave a mark on the world it would be : Never be ashamed of who you were or where u came from, it’s just preparing you for who you WILL be and where you WILL go!

In 5 years Women Wear Pants Too Inc. will hopefully have Women Enrichment centers throughout the USA, who will assist Women, Single Mothers, and DV Survivors in everyday life issues.

The Break the Cycle not the Love Movement

www.breakthecyclenotthelove.com

Shaunesi’s main goal is to spread awareness through fashion, while raising money for her non profit & others. Shaunesi reached out to a local business owner and friend to help create a (shirt) slogan that would spread a positive message.

They designed Break the Cycle not the Love.

After wearing the shirt a couple of times Shaunesi realized, that it went so much further than just her situation. Break the Cycle not the Love is a movement, with multiple meanings! After a couple facebook and twitter posts the shirt & movement took off! February Black Love Series

I invite you in to the dialogue between Melody and Lawrence. Listen to their story as they share their favorite and most intimate memories. Black love is alive and thriving!!!

Tell us how you met each other and started dating.

We met each other through a mutual friend New Years Eve 2003. Our friend thought that we would be a good match for each other. I saw a guy I knew, so I spoke. He was standing with two other guys eating pizza. Lawrence happened to be one of them. If you told me then that I was standing next to my future husband, I would not have believed you.

What attracted you to him/her?

Melody: He was actually not my type at all. I preferred the “pretty boy” type of guy. You know, light skin, skinny and someone that dressed well just like me. He was down to earth, darker skin, a solid 230lbs and athletic. We had one phone conversation, and I was hooked! He was so funny and just cool. He was everything I never knew I wanted.

Lawrence: She was what I always wanted. A girl who ran track. I am an athlete at heart, and so is she. Sports is what brought us together. I saw a picture of her before I met her and I thought she was very pretty.

How does she/he add to your life?

Lawrence: She adds purpose and unconditional love. She has always been there for me. She takes my drive to a whole new level.

Melody: Wow, this guy is everything God knew I needed. He is the perfect balance for me. He brings me back to reality when I’m not being rational or realistic. He is honest with me even when the truth hurts. In return, he gives me so much unconditional love and the best of him.

What are some things that you guys discussed before considering marriage?

We discussed many things. Life goals, expectations and how we were going to reach those goals together. We also talked about our ideas such as having no family and/or relationship roles. As a wife, I will not be expected to wash the clothes and clean the dishes. I will do those things out of love for my husband and he will do the same.

What is one thing that your fiance does that you strongly dislike (pet-peeve)?

Lawrence: She is very unorganized. I guess it’s her artistic personality.

Melody: He’s way too neat and particular. He has to have everything in the same spot every day. Things like that are not important to me. Other than that, he’s great.

What things have you had to give up or what adjustments have you had to make in preparation for marriage?

Melody: I have had to give up being such a brat. I’ve always been spoiled. I’m daddy’s little girl and I always got my way. Lawrence does not let me  get my way all the time, but I am however still very spoiled.

We are the perfect balance for each other.

Lawrence: I’ve had to give up only caring about myself but it’s a wonderful feeling.

What are five words that describe your relationship?

FUN, Loving, God-Fearing, Open and Honest.

What is your fiance’s best personality trait?

Melody: He always knows how to make me laugh even in the worst moments. That’s a gift of his.

Lawrence: The way that she cares about others.

How did he propose? Where were you guys?

Melody: It was Tuesday Oct 18th approx 8pm. I was coming from my sister’s house. He was rushing me to get to his apartment which wasn’t unusual, because we miss each other often.  He was like, where are you so I can get the food out? He usually opens the door.  I figured he was busy. When I opened the door, he was on one knee with the ring my father proposed to my mother with. I can paint this picture a thousand times. He said, Melody Martin will you marry me?  I have never experienced a moment like that one. I couldn’t even look at him. I just cried for about thirty minutes. It was PERFECT, just the two of us on a random Tuesday night.

How did she react to your proposal? Were you nervous?

Lawrence: Yes I was very nervous. Not that she would say No, but the moment of asking brings so much emotion. It’s impossible not to be nervous. Her reaction was everything I wanted. She was surprised and genuinely happy.

Personally, how have you prepared to be a great wife/husband?

Melody: I searched for what God expects of a wife, asked my parents and my soon to be husband what he desired in a wife. I try daily to meet those expectations.

Lawrence: First, I went to the Bible to see what the role of a good husband was and prayed to God to help me be that. I have sought out advice from other married couples. Most importantly, I understand that our marriage will be different. I have made sure that I can be the man that Melody always desired and I have prepared myself to take on that responsibility.

What advice would you give to singles, couples, and those headed to the altar?

We would tell couples to build a strong foundation before getting married. Make sure God is the head of your lives forever and always. Communication is a vital key in a relationship. We have learned over the years how to have a conversation even during confrontation. We believe it is also important to have fun! We have a ball together. We laugh about everything.

February Black Love Series

Black love is real and present. It’s the heart beat of our communities. I now present to you to Mr. Reginald Lampkin and Mrs. Kristen Lampkin. They are celebrating  7 months of marriage February 11.

Their relationship began at Ball State University. Reggie transferred to Ball State the spring semester of his sophomore year. His first week back from Illinois, he sat down with a friend of his to find out about the girls at Ball State. Of course, he wanted to know who the cute girls were. Immediately his friend said that she knew the perfect girl for him and that girl was Kristen Holden. So of course he looked her up on facebook, and they began to message each other back and forth. He thought she was beautiful and he was struck by her smile!

They met one night at BW3’s. It was the first time they got a chance to see each other in person.  Reggie recalls that night, we were kind of looking at each other and flirting with our  eyes the whole time. Five minutes before we were about to leave, we finally introduced ourselves and broke the ice. We exchanged numbers and the rest was history.  Slowly but surely I found out she was beautiful from the inside out and we could not stop talking to each other. I knew in the back of mind that she had many of the qualities I wanted in a wife. As the years went on, I put a stamp on it and I was for sure that she was the one.

As their relationship grew and developed, Kristen was attracted to Reggie because of his relationship with God, his charming personality, and his eagerness to know her inside and out. She describes him as a handsome gentleman. She says his best personality trait is his giving spirit. Before marriage, they had been dating on and off for around 5 years. Their love for God has been and will continue to be the glue in their relationship.

Kristen and Reggie advise singles, couples, and those newly married to practice effective communication. Listen to understand and not to respond. Never stop dating and romancing each other. Do many different things together. We enjoy walks along the canal after work, going to church together, watching movies and documentaries, and going to jazz concerts as well as many other things. We enjoy just spending quality time with each other. We are both our firm believes in God being the foundation of our marriage and relationship. When asked what five words describe their relationship, their reply is God, honesty, communication, love, and respect!

What steps did you take before your engagement that made you stronger in marriage?

Before our engagement, we had actually started attending I say I do class which is for singles, dating, engaged, and married individuals at Eastern Star to strengthen our relationship.

What are some things that you guys discussed before getting married?

We discussed several things prior to our wedding day.  One thing that was vital for us was not preparing for the wedding, but preparing for the marriage.  We discussed our goals as couple, individual goals, traditions, finances, kids, where wanted to live, career goals, etc.

How did he propose? Where were you guys?

He proposed to me at my mom’s house in her living in room.

How did you react to his proposal? Were you nervous?

We were actually broke up when he proposed.  So, I had no idea.  I cried in my lap for like 3 minutes before I said yes because I was in shock and filled with happiness. I knew I wanted to marry him one day.

What things have you had to give up or what adjustments have you had to make since getting married?

When you are married, I don’t think you give up anything. Its more so about adjusting and not thinking for only you, but also thinking and taking into consideration your wife or husband in everything that you do. As well as learning each other’s love language.

Our first dance was to Chrisette Michele’s song  Golden.

“Welcome to our site where our motto is ‘You are what you Dream.’ We blog for the reader that has, yet, to come into their own but still has the courage to step out on faith and follow their dreams to achieve their personal, professional, and entrepreneurial goals.”

Interview with Kelley

  • What is the name of your business?

A few years ago my best friend and I created a blog by the name of http://www.3-dolls.com  D.O.L.L.S is an acronym for Dreams Of Love, Life, and Success.  Our blog was created to empower and inspire young women.

  • What was the moment you realized this was a part of you and it had to be done?

I can remember the exact moment.  I was in my office at work while I was in graduate school.  I was checking out blogs and I came across Those Girls Are Wild.  I had been searching for blogs other than gossip blogs or celebrity blogs and this was a breath of fresh air for me!  They were funny, intelligent, and were big on just being who you are!  I knew in that moment that I wanted to contribute to that realm of positive blogging.  I called Kirsten and asked her if she wanted to blog with me and the rest is really history!

  • What made you turn the idea for the business into a finished product?

Blogging really excited me.  Even though I was in graduate school, creatively I wasn’t fulfilled.  I knew the idea we had was awesome and that there weren’t that many blogs out there that were inspirational and empowering, but still fun.  We really wanted to be that blog that provided that so one Saturday we sat down did some research and created our blog.  We invited all of our friends to check it out and everyone was so excited and supportive we knew we had to keep it going.

  • What personal developments lead to your business?

On a personal level, as I shared I wanted to do something creative in life.  I had come to a point where I wanted to put myself out there more and wanted to share my gifts with the world and serve others.  The blog fit in perfectly as an outlet for what I was experiencing personally at that time in my life.

  • What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

The one thing that keeps me motivated when outside support is less than expected is knowing that I’m doing what makes me happy.  I know that by doing what makes me happy I am being of service to others in a positive way.  It is also very uplifting for us to hear even just one person say that we brightened their day.

  • Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

My overall Hero is God, because with him I can do all things.  My SheRo is my mom! She is an amazing woman and a “Jill of all Trades.”  I am more than convinced that my mom can do anything and she instilled in me that I can do anything I put my mind to!  I also admire Beyoncé, she has an untouchable work ethic and tremendous passion!

  • What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

I would have to say our greatest success with the blog so far is the countless number of people who email, tweet, facebook, or contact us in anyway and let us know that we’ve inspired them.  That is really something that lets me know everyday that our blog is successful!

  • How have you made a difference in the lives of others?

One way we’ve made a difference in the lives of others is by showing them that you do not have to be a part of the crowd.  I’ve never been a part of “the crowd.”  With our blog we’ve shown others that yeah there are millions of gossip and celebrity blogs out there (and some of them are amazing), but you don’t have to join the crowd to inspire the lives of others.  I think made a huge difference in the lives of others by creating a positive platform for ourselves and others to connect with and support each other.

  • What mark do you want to leave on the world?

Ultimately, I want to leave a legacy of perseverance, passion, love, and creativity.  Those are the things I want to be associated with my life.  I want my life to be an example of the fact that, if you put your mind to it, you can absolutely live the life of your dreams no matter how young or old you are.

  • Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

In the next 5 years I hope to see 3-dolls.com become a major player in the blogosphere.  Currently we are providing some fun self-help classes to our readers through Inner Glam University.  Within the next five years we plan to expand Inner Glam University hosting blogging events created by us, offering Inner Glam University workshops, anda few other surprises.

 Interview with Kirsten

  • What is the name of your business?

The name of my business is a blog called 3D.O.L.L.S. Almost two years ago, Kelley and I decided to create a blog that focused on three dreams of love, life, and success. Those are three broad areas of life where most people try to find some type of fulfillment in each, and we thought it would be great to share stories of people achieving success in those areas as well as some of our own stories in addition to some advice from time to time.

  • What was the moment you realized this was a part of you and it had to be done?

I’ll be honest here! :) I really was not into reading blogs at first. I didn’t surf the internet to get the latest scoop on celebrities or any other gossip floating around, and in the beginning, when I thought about blogs, I thought about Perez Hilton and some others. Kelley, however, found some blogs that didn’t concentrate on celebrity gossip, and she asked if I wanted to blog about positive lifestyles and people pursuing their passions. The more I thought about the idea the more excited I became so I knew we had to follow through and make our site stand out from the rest!

  • What made you turn the idea for the business into a finished product?

First impressions are everything, and when we launched our site, we wanted everyone to realize our blog was more than a hobby! It had purpose. With that in mind, we wanted to present our blog as a polished product that got the message across that we were serious about this undertaking.

  • What personal developments lead to your business?

I thought our blog would give me an outlet to express my creativity especially in the area of web design, but I also was excited about the blog because it was a way to keep a personal account of all the lessons I learned related to love, life, and success. My personal stories and advice that I offer can help a reader or two get through difficult situations, and I like that feeling!

  • What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

I don’t think people realize that Kelley and I are on the same road as they are. We’re both trying to find fulfillment in the same three areas of love, life, and success just like everyone else, and the blog is just as inspirational to us as it is to our readers. I learn more and more about chasing after my dreams just by interacting with them on a daily basis. I enjoy the fact that social media and networking has allowed us to have a never-ending conversation with like-minded individuals that we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet face to face without creating our blog. So even when outside support is dwindling, I can sit back and enjoying the learning experience and plan out my next steps to following my dreams.

  • Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

My SheRo is my mom! She taught me to go after everything I want in life—no exceptions! She’s always modeled that way of living for me, and I’ve seen just how successful you can become from taking initiative and following through with your plans. I really model myself after her! She’s my blueprint!

  • What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

I would say the overwhelming support that we receive on a daily basis has been our greatest success so far.

  • How have you made a difference in the lives of others?

Positivity is contagious, and I think that Kelley and I have spread that attitude around the world. We let everyone know that it’s definitely okay to feel GOOD about themselves especially during hard times. Also, we really encourage our readers to evaluate their life and figure out what makes them unique so that they’ll never forget their self worth. This is so important to us because we believe confidence is key and once that’s under control half the road to your dreams has already been travelled.

  • What mark do you want to leave on the world?

I want people to look at my life and realize that there’s not just one pathway that you MUST take to reach your dreams and embody success. Your road may be crooked, curvy, or straight, but all that matters is that you reach your final destination with a clear conscience and an even clearer vision for your hopes and dreams.

  • Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I want to see us triple our following on social networking sites like Youtube and twitter. I would also like for us to write a book about following your goals and achieving success!

Your dreams are bigger than things; they are apart of your DNA. Quote by 3DOLLS

Tibble Fanta Kwanza Jessica and Ebony are the five gorgeous women that own and operate Runway Diva Boutique. They each represent a different type of women. Jessica says one day there will be Runway Diva dolls to further capture the essence of each of their personalities.

Each one of them has carried a piece of RD with them since they were young girls.  They have a vision for RD and believe that with God on their side, their plans will succeed. Fanta prays daily that God will use RD in the way that He wants RD to be used, and that RD will impact the community.

Ebony says that she was the kid that loved clothes. Tibble always had dreams about putting clothes together and making others look and feel lovely. Fanta and Kwanza agree that RD was a birthright, a tribute to their mother and the women that came before her.  Jessica shared the same passion for fashion in her youth, which is even stronger today.  They were never too far from seeing their dreams manifest.

Step into style with Runway Diva. Find a look that is all your own with fabulous jewelry, clothes, and shoes to choose from. Nubian Naturals, Jazzy Jewelry, Impeccable Style, and EccEntric StyleS Inc. are just a few of many vendors that Runway Diva works with. The clothing is for women of all races shapes and sizes.

The world is your runway.

Since Runway Diva opened its door to Indianapolis May 1,2011  they have commanded the attention of magazines such as Scoop and  Mode. They have been featured on Wish TV-8. The ladies have held several social events at their boutique such as a cupcake social, lunch n wine, and a sip n see. They have taken part in countless fashion shows such as Paparazzi Ready, Kiss of Fashion, and Women of Excellence. They are always working hard to expand their business.

RD has been in a force in the community as well. They have volunteered their time at The Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving Dinner, Heavenly Gifts Toy Drive, as well many other events such as Makeover Monday, a head to toe transformation for one woman. She may be experiencing a rough patch in her life or dealing with low self-esteem, but at the end of her makeover, her spirit will be renewed.

Without a vision, plans will perish.

Tibble says RD will open boutiques in other states with the next boutique landing in LA. She wants to reach out to the community more, particularly the homeless. Fanta wants RD to be bigger and better every day. She would like to see boutiques overseas and around the world. Most importantly, she says, Let God’s will be done, not ours. Kwanza envisions RD having a men’s clothing line within the year, a personal line, more than one store and for RD to be in fashion week. Jessica says RD will be a household name. There will be a RD perfume line, a house line with RD inspired comforters, curtains, pillows, decorations and more. She describes RD as being the Russell Simmons or Sean John for women in the next decade. She would love for RD to have a reality show that represents real Black women.Ebony’s vision includes Runway Diva being a brand, a name recognized around the globe. She believes it is important to look beautiful from the inside out, so helping women overcome body issues and insecurities is very important to her. If you don’t love yourself, who will?

Runway Diva will be a powerhouse in the world of fashion and in the community at large.

What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

To see the number of people who want us to be in fashion shows as well as seeing happy clients leave the boutique. To thrive during the recession is truly a success, and it is an honor for customers to refer their friends and build RD’s image. Most importantly, it is a success to be 5 healthy women.

What advice would you offer to everyday women and women in business?

Find what you love, and go after it whole-heartedly! Have passion for what you do. Without passion, it will be hard to succeed. Live your dreams. Know your craft as well as your competition. Be dedicated and willing to put in long hours. You will have to make sacrifices to be successful. Keep your vision alive.  Expect stress and ups and downs. Lastly, be organized and prioritize your goals.

Runway diva is a place you can feel at home and unwind. Stop by, chat, stay awhile. Get to know the ladies of RD personally.

President and Founder Devin T. Robinson X

www.ROBINSONX.com

What was the moment you realized this was a part of you and it had to be done?

Sad, depressed, angry and motivated while I sat listening to a lethargic HIV educator tell tales of my people dying from this preventable virus. It made me vow to fight with heart, inspiration, vigor and a willingness to battle until the war is won or until I am battle worn then I too will pass the baton.

What made you turn the idea for the business into a finished product?

Noticing a drought in HIV performance based organizations; I saw a demand for an anomaly. From there, I indulged in the sheer abundance of requests for my time and attention. Figuring I would need more than one of me to inspire the world, I realized that others have better talent, more passion and in many cases greater ideas on how to lead this fight. Thus gave me insurance in my belief that with my leadership…this will be an infectious product. No business could ever be a true finished product since we continue to grow with times, changes in policy and new virus mutations. However, we finished a strong business model that is willing to transform with this virus as the years progress.

What personal developments lead to your business?

Hating the idea and fact that so many of my people were dying from this one virus. It invoked a spirit of change inside me. My personal life became encumbered with the dedication…. addiction to making a difference.

What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

I don’t fight for the people…I fight for the cause. When I do anything…the cause is benefited. Even if 1 person shows up, I know the cause won. If I did it for the people and they did not show up…I would be distraught and defeated. However, I focus on doing what is right because it is right. It motivates me beyond support. Would you steal even if you knew you would not get caught? If you are good because you are good…you won’t steal no matter the circumstance. Same goes with this line of work. You do it because it needs to be done, despite followers, antagonizers or helpers…you just do it.

Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

My sister is my hero, my mentors The Ruffins, Mrs. Williams and Ancel Pratt III are my second tier Heroes and Sheros. They saw a diamond when everyone else saw dirt. Without them, I would be sand on a beach of nothingness.

What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

My greatest success is a tie between creating the first ever AIDS Olympics, speaking at TEDxPSUT in Amman, Jordan and being the keynote speaker at the World Conference on AIDS in Johannesburg, South Africa.

How have you made a difference in the lives of others?

Through my struggles and success in addition to “Where I came from to where I am” story, I have given people insight on how good God is and how above your circumstances He is. My ability, teachings and work are nothing compared to my story. That makes the difference because I live it, show it in my actions and inspire others because of it.

What mark do you want to leave on the world?

My goal is to leave the world in a better place than I inherited it. Much like the great African empire Egypt influenced the world, I too desire to inspire those to look at the glass as a cup or bowl and aim to do things better than previously done.

Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I would like to see my business as the go to organization for information pertaining to HIV/AIDS and civil activism.

Please pick up Devin T. Robinson’s  second book, “Love Is Not An STD”. The book only costs…a penny! The mission behind selling it for a penny is to display that some wisdom is cheap to obtain but priceless to our circumstance. Go to www.LoveIsNotAnSTD.com to purchase your copy.

We Applaud You,

Be-Jeweled MakeUp Artistry!!!

The co-owner/founder of Be-Jeweled MakeUp artistry is Jewel Payne. She is an aspiring free lance makeup artist who will one day travel the world doing what she loves.

She believes it is very important to educate others about taking care of their skin before putting on any type of foundation. A daily skincare regimen  is  key to radiant and glowing youthful skin. A good skincare regimen includes the use of a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer made for your skin type.

How can someone get healthy looking skin even if they wear makeup often?

You should cleanse your face two times a day. This will prevent unnecessary breakouts due to clogged skin and pores. Make sure to use a makeup remover or baby wipes to remove all makeup residue. If your skin is a combination of oily/dry skin, you can use anti-blemish cleansing foam such as the product by Expert followed by an anti blemish toner. For a good moisturizer, you can use a matte moisturizer such as Daily defense matte moisturizer by Image skin care. Mary Kay Timewise body toning lotion is a good product as well. Remember to use upward strokes when cleansing your face.

Tell us more about yourself.

I have been a makeup artist also known as MUA for about four years. I love to make my clients up for events such as prom, fashion shows, photoshoots, or for a fun night on the town.

Close friends and family encouraged me when I doubted myself. I had never thought of being a makeup artist until a nice amount of people began to compliment me on the way I applied makeup to my eyes and face. I kept pushing myself to learn new things on a consistent basis to improve my craft. I started checking out YouTube, and I realized how many possibilities there were for makeup artists.

I would not have made it to this point without a few instrumental women such as LaQueshia  Bell and photographers Cheria Caldwell and Candace Hill.  LaQueisha Bell  is the makeup artist that pushed me to the point that I couldn’t  stop. The rush, the excitement, it was endless.

LaQueisha always lifted me up, and she would show me different techniques  to apply makeup on myself and my clients. Photographers Cheria Caldwell and Candace Hill helped build my portfolio and provided endless support and motivation to go after my dreams. I am so  grateful for these women. They helped me on my journ3y to discover and express my creative side.

I jumped out of my comfort zone, and I will never jump back in. I am also grateful for close friends that let me practice on their faces as well as giving me their time for photoshoots.

My greatest success is receiving compliments from people all over the U.S.  as well as being  a featured makeup artist at a fashion show in Atlanta this March!

Some of my clients that do not wear makeup on daily basis or rarely wear it at all have the perspective that they will feel “fake or plastic”. They find different flaws on their face that they don’t like, and I show them an easy way to glam up their natural look in 5 minutes or less.  I apply as little makeup as possible. Most of my clients can’t even tell that they have makeup on. When my customers are satisfied, it always puts a smile on my face. I love to see their facial expression when they see themselves in the mirror after sitting in the chair for awhile.  Their facial expression 9 times out of ten is, “OMG”, I look gorgeous!

For a glam look for any event you can reach Jewel on fb (be-jeweled make up artisry or jewel payne)  or by email at jewelapayne@gmail.com!!!

We Applaud You,

 Sistas United Against Breast Cancer!!!

Organizations that champion the cause of breast cancer awareness have always near and dear to my heart. Organizations like Sistas United Against Breast Cancer deserve the spotlight. Their work in the community is invaluable, and 5 years from its inception the organization has extended their reach far beyond the scope of cancer outreach. They put on annual back to school drives to help provide our children with school supplies for the coming school year, they provide toys for children at Christmas, and participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk every year. Year to date Sistas United A.B.C. has raised over $5,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness and has donated more than 1,000 toys to the Julian Center of Indianapolis.

This past weekend, Sistas United A.B.C. held their 3rd annual Heavenly Gifts Toy Drive. Many families were blessed by the event. There were crafts for the children, games, contests, cookie decorating, and food for the entire family. It was a fun-filled event. The organization would like to give a special thanks to their partners for the event: Church of the Living God PGT II Youth Dept, Grind Hard Entertainment, Runway Diva Boutique, The Greatest DJ’s, and Chaney Financial Group. They would also like to thank all of the individual donors who have faith in Sistas United A. B. C. and heavily support every event with either monetary or in kind donations and volunteer hours.

Sistas United A.B.C. was formed in 2006 by Heather Foster, the President of the organization. Heather’s aunt had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer that same year. As part of a close-knit family, she knew she would be taking the journ3y with her aunt and standing by her side. One day she searched online for a support group geared towards African American women in Indianapolis. To her surprise, she didn’t find anything. It was at that moment that God spoke to her. “This is the moment He gave me my main purpose in life.”

When Sistas United A.B.C. first started it was primarily a team of family members that participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. Over time they realized that in order to have a stronger impact on our community, they would have to expand their scope and mission to include community service and outreach programs.

Heather says that she is generally a private and quiet observer of people. In order to take her organization to new levels she has had to take some of those walls down and expose more of myself.

Let’s hear directly from Ms. Heather Foster herself.

What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

I have an awesome family who I know will stick by me and the organization through it all. But ultimately, Phillippians 1:6 always gets me through anytime I feel like I’m ready to give up. “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

I love her excitement when asked who her SheRo or HeRo was.

I have both! My SheRo’s are definitely my mom, Sharon Foster, and grandmother, Ida Naomi Grady. My grandmother was truly the matriarch of our family. If anyone had a problem or needed anything they would always call or go see “mama”. She was the mother of 13 children and provided them all with what they needed, even though she didn’t have much. She may not have agreed with every decision you made, but that didn’t change the amount of love or acceptance she had for you. I truly miss her and wish she was here to see some of the things I have been able to accomplish using the life lessons she taught me. My mother has taught me how to live and operate spiritually and honestly with class, grace, dignity and style. She is the best sounding board I could’ve asked for. My father, Leon Foster, is my HeRo. My father instilled an excellent work ethic into my brothers, my nephew and I. My father would wake us up every morning with one of his motivational sayings like, “See you at the top” or his 3 P’s “Prepared, Positive, Powerful and Ready for success.” I started volunteering with him when I was 9. We would deliver dinners annually for the Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving dinner. He always reminded me that I was blessed and I needed to be a blessing to others. As a five year Prostate cancer survivor, his resilient spirit definitely keeps me inspired.

What is your greatest success with Sistas United ABC thus far?

My greatest success thus far has been the ability to see my dream and vision come to fruition. I have a lot more I would like for the organization to accomplish, but we have come further than most imagined we would.

Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

In five years, I would like to see Sistas United Against Breast Cancer making an even larger impact on the community. I would like to see us offering monthly empowerment workshops and sponsoring local health fairs.  I would also like to see us housed in our own permanent facility.

“I’m a strong believer that you write your own eulogy by the life you live. As the old spiritual song says, ‘Let the life I live speak for me’.  I would like for the work that my organization has done to have touched one person. If one life has been enriched, if one woman has been inspired, if one child has been blessed; I’m satisfied.”

If you would like more information or to get involved with Sistas United Against Breast Cancer, please email: SistasUnitedABC@gmail.com, Call:317.514.4638 or find us on Facebook.

We Applaud You, Designer M-tu-ition!!!

Need a designer? M. can help.  M. short for Marlena Banks. Custom logos, branding & identity development, interior design, and print materials such as business cards are a few of her specialties.

Designer M-tu-ition is a creative design service tailored to YOUR needs. Prayer is the key ingredient in the design process.  M.  prays about EVERY project, no matter what.  She refuses to give her clients anything less than what she believes God has for them.

Each design goes through a process, takes time, each customer is unique and special, so is their project.

Designer M-tu-ition will help clarify and bring order to your vision. The first step is getting  your vision out of your head and onto paper in a format that other people can understand.

How did you come with the name of your business?

I have the skills of a designer and the ear of intuition.  I can hear and create what you really want. When you come to a designer, it’s kind of like getting your hair done.  You know what you want, but you also want their opinion and you want them to tell you what’s best for you, your face, your color.  I want to provide that kind of counsel to my clients and develop relationships where I listen to the heart of what they want and give them exactly what they came for.  Designer M-tu-ition gives a  voice to their inner want.

Can The Journ3y take a look at your logo designs and who have you designed logos for?

Biscotti’s, an internet café , Savannah Bistro, Calendars for Cause, Women Reaching Out, a women’s empowerment organization, Next Level Enforcement, a security service, Essence,  a restaurant with fine southern cuisine, and many other businesses and individuals.

Can you tell me more about Calendars for Cause?

It is an amazing concept with BIG plans.  M. is working with the client to develop company identity, brand, marketing materials, and calendar designs.  Here’s a few preliminary items we’ve done so far.  Client wants bold, innovative, eye-catching calendars with a message; M. delivered the eye candy.  Client also wanted a logo, business cards and letterhead to represent his company; M. helped with that too.  Client is loving it; for the most recent calendar design package he said “This is SICK!”.

What’s the story behind the logo for Solomon Christian Online Bookstore?

My client wanted a butterfly that looked like a soft dream landing on a gentle flower…oh and can you make it SPARKLE? M. delivered and client said “It captured everything I wanted and when asked about the service she recieved: “I don’t know how it could have been any better, you helped keep me on track!”

Wow another satisfied customer.

What type of interior design projects have you completed?

Interior Design Project: $6,000 budget, total bathroom makeover. Luxury is the concept.  Client wanted functional opulence for her dream bathroom.  M. listened and delivered with a design full of rich materials, functional & beautiful fixtures, artwork & a few extra accessories to make her smile.  Client was very satisfied; the design exceeded her desires. She says, “I still look at it today and can’t believe this is my bathroom”.

I’ve designed exhibits, calendars, invitations, blogs, and events.  Talk to me about your project’s needs and I’ll see if I can do it!  I love a new challenge but I  will only accept projects I am certain I can do (unless you’re willing to grow & work with me).

Owtspok3n Photography LLC!!!

Welcome to Galleria Owtspok3n

OwtSpok3n simply means the photos speak for themselves. OwtSpok3n Photography is more than just snap shots.  It is images with abstract angles and dynamic subject matter that tell stories, sparks conversation, heals and creates art.

“Allow your perspective to be altered and breathe pixels.”

What was the moment you realized this was a part of you and it had to be done?

After returning from Costa Rica where I studied abroad for my last semester of undergrad, I knew for sure I wanted to take photography seriously and start freelancing.  I have always enjoyed taking photos but it was the beauty of Costa Rica and the people that helped me realize the joy of capturing moments.

What made you turn the idea for the business into a finished product?

I started attending a weekly open mic held at the Earth House in 2010.  The host asked me to photograph the event and post the photos on facebook. I was honored and excited to do so.  Several people approached me after months of photographing the event asking if I do photo shoot,or if I would like to take photos at other events, and how much I charge.  At that moment I figured it was time to make my hobby a business because it was so well received by others.  Another factor was because I was having difficulty finding employment after graduating from undergrad and months of applyingfor jobs.

What personal developments lead to your business?

Probably the most important personal development that led to my business was having confidence in my work and ability to produce great images.  There are many great photographers in Indianapolis but I had to remind myself that it wasn’t a competition and that I was tapping into a market that had not really touched.  I was working with people who were used to going to department stores or local photography businesses in a strip mall to get their family photos taken.  Therefore I had to alter their perspective in a sense to make them see that their images and memories can also be art.

What keeps you motivated when outside support is less than expected?

The peace I have when I’m behind the lens.  It doesn’t matter what type of day I may have experienced.  I can pick up my camera and take a walk and just begin photographing things that most people would over look in their daily commute.

Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

My mom, she is very supportive in all that I do.  She tells everyone that I freelance.  She is a teacher and several of her students and their families have used my services.

What is your greatest success with the business thus far?

Photographing for the cover of a local magazine called Lure Mag, photographing an Erykah Badu concert and meeting her afterwards and photographing an event for Tammy Sutton Brown of the Indiana Fever.

How have you made a difference in the lives of others?

I would like to believe that I have made a difference in the lives of others because I capture their moments so that they may relive them time and time again.

What mark do you want to leave on the world?

I would like to leave my mark with images that are timeless and have the ability to evoke emotion no matter where a person is from or what language they speak.

Where would you like to see your business in 5 years?

I would like to have my own art gallery with my photography as well as other’s artwork displayed.

Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can.

– Danny Kaye

How will you paint your canvas?

We Applaud YOU, TIOBS!!!

 cantwaitanymore.com

A living, walking, breathing  movement. I’ll join… Fist pump. Positivity is on the horizon. According to TIOBS, which stands for The Idea of Being Somebody, contrary to popular belief, we are not the lost generation!!!!.

”It is The Idea of Being Somebody,  a metacognitive (awareness of your thoughts) concept, that’s why the “IDEA” is so important…to “be somebody” one must first think and know they are somebody.  Becoming aware of the power of our ideas and attitudes is what gives us our confidence and drive to be and do whatever we want.”

Pause. Let’s break that down.  Everything begins as a thought. TIOBS began as a thought in the mind of James Drakeford probably way before he was even aware of it. Three key words  define TIOBS.  Self-Determination.  Self-Education. Self-Initiative. James says we have to know how powerful our thoughts are. Why TIOBS, I asked. He responded, people needed to have a different mindset to be determined to live the life they wanted. TIOBS is all about  getting what you deserve in life. What do you deserve?

Let’s hear from Mr. James Drakeford himself, LEADER, MOTIVATOR, INNOVATOR…

Over the years I’ve had a growing passion for wanting the best for people.  I always wanted to do something special in my life that would help people to live prosperous lives.

During my senior year at Ohio State I was student teaching at an elementary school where many of the students were falling into self-destructive trends and I seeing this on a daily basis really killed me inside.  I felt like I needed to do something immediately to fight these destructive trends.  I was tired of watching and waiting.  At that moment; I came up with “The Idea of Being Somebody.”

The urgency to fight these destructive trends made me take the initiative to go from an idea to an action.  I had been thinking of what I could do for years, how many more years would it take?  It was sad and it hurt my heart to see children going down the wrong path.  That hurt made me want to act.

What personal developments lead to your business?

I was inspired by my self-initiative.  I finally came up with an idea that I thought would work and that inspired me.  When I started the movement/website it felt good.  It was a good start to my ultimate goal.

Who is your SheRo or HeRo?

I have so many sheros and heros.  My parents, grandparents, siblings, family friends, and other people I’ve grown up with etc.  One of my latest heros is Fred Hampton.  He led a chapter of the Black Panther Party in Chicago in the 60’s.  He was only 21 years old with such passion and responsibility.  He was willing to die for “the people”, and he did that.  He was murdered by the FBI because he was seen as a threat to the order of the country.  His heart and passion inspire me.  He cared so much about helping his people, he knew many people didn’t like what he was doing.  He knew that he could die doing what he was doing, and he kept doing it anyway.  I wish to have that much courage one day.

Where would you like to see TIOBS in 5 years?

In 5 years I see TIOBS being much more “major” than it is now.  TIOBS is at 0 right now and in 5 years I hope we can get to at least 10 (on a scale to 100).  I see TIOBS being nationally known/recognized.  Hopefully it reaches much more people.  We’re reaching thousands now, in 5 years the goal is hundreds of thousands.  I see many consistent programs/events for children and adults that stemmed from TIOBS.  We’re good on a small scale, but the goal is simply to expand.  The more we can expand; the greater the impact we can make.

What mark do you want to leave on the world?

I want to leave the world with something that lasts forever.  I want to make change that is beyond me.  I feel like TIOBS is already far beyond me, I may say a lot or be the one who spreads the message, but everything is inspired from God, Jesus, and people I’ve met or learned about.  So it’s far beyond just me.  I just want to leave the world with timeless mental material. Ideas that can be passed on forever, and actions that can be remembered forever !!!

Your dreams, your destiny , and your purpose are calling. Don’t Wait!!!

Be the movement!!!

 We Applaud YOU, Fly’s Nest!!!

flysnest.com

Fly Won owns and operates Fly’s Nest. She is a one woman brand. A Master Thrifter, ReSellHer, and DesignHer, her love for thrifting and fashion created Fly’s Nest, an E-beautyque where she displays her thrift findings and eargear she creates using vintage fabrics. Check out her fab finds at flysnest.com!!!

Fly’s Nest is constantly evolving. It has taken several different forms which include fashion show production, styling, reselling, and personal shopping.

Fly Won highlights the Clothes Minded fashion show that she produced the last two years as being her greatest success. The event attracted over 1000 attendees each time, sold out crowds. Fly Won has always been passionate about fashion; she produced her first fashion show when she was a senior in high school. Fly’s Nest began to focus primarily on reselling  a few years ago as a result of the attention  Fly Won received  from her  unique looks. She now houses her vintage finds in a boutique by the name of Sherane’s Vintage Closet.  She is honored  that another young black business woman appreciated and confirmed her skill. I love the sister support!!!

The fashionista entrepreneur says her father is her HeRo.  He introduced her to fashion by being a style icon and model in his own right.  She also looks up to a lot of smaller business owners like herself. She has been encouraged by several  fearless women over the last couple years that have pushed her and her brand to be better!!!

I am inspired by  Fly Won’s  ability  to turn her love and passion for thrifting into a profitable business.  I am also inspired by her efforts to promote awareness for suicide prevention due to the loss of a family member. She is involved with a charity by the name of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention which has allowed her to speak out about the issue/epidemic. Her involvement with suicide prevention has connected her with people that have attempted suicide. They have expressed how her efforts to raise awareness have helped them in some way on their journey to overcome mental illness.

When I asked Fly Won what mark she wanted to leave on the world, she replied, “I want to leave many marks.”  She wants to be an example to women to follow their dreams and an example of how God works.  Her advice to woman is that you do not have to rely on a man to be successful.

Fly won would like to have an actual beautyque in the next few years, as well as being recognized as a prominent go-to spot for vintage wear. She would love to see items from her beautyque on tv and in print, and for celebs to wear and endorse her brand.

We Applaud YOU, The Core Reader!!!

thecorereader.com

A shout out to one of my bestest and realest friends, Ellisa Oyewo and her sister Eden Oyewo for their AMAZING online magazine called The Core Reader. It is for girls of color ages 12-17. The Core Reader stands for Creating Opportunity to Reach Empowerment.  I love what it stands for!  CORE is more than an online magazine; it is a movement for young girls that was published in August of this year. CORE addresses topics such as relationships, eating healthy, budgeting, and being the BEST YOU from the teen perspective! Young women need a go-to- guide like this that will encourage and uplift them. One of my favorite parts of Core is its bi-weekly feature of a young girl who stands out in her community and is empowering people in her everyday life.

The work for CORE began in the sisters’ youth as they had encouraging and uplifting women around them such as their mother, Barbara Oyewo. She encouraged her daughters to help others, and in return they are reaching out to young girls. Ellisa says that her mother is her SheRo without a doubt. Her strength has guided their family. The values and morals she instilled in them drives them forward.

CORE allows the sisters to connect with their younger selves and address issues that they faced. Ellisa found it hard to find a real representation of black women in the magazines that she read as a girl. This void fueled their desire to create a magazine for girls just like them. They wanted to create a place where girls could be comfortable being themselves. A place that was untainted by the media’s idea of beauty.  True beauty lies within.

Two of the most important questions we discussed in our interview were the following: what is your greatest success with CORE thus far, and where would you like to see CORE in five years.

She enjoys seeing the impact CORE has on its readers and the girl’s excitement when they are featured on the website. Recently, a young girl sent Ellisa an email that had her gleaming from ear to ear. The following quote explains why Ellisa was excited about the email she received.

“The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance – and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning.” -Oprah Winfrey

In the next five years, she would like to see world-wide distribution, CORE for males, CORE TV and CORE radio as well as CORE centers for empowerment.

I love the vision and drive of this sister duo. I am so honored to share them with you. Please check out CORE at thecorereader.com.  It is also on twitter @theCOREreader. Most importantly please share CORE with young women!!! We must build up our youth in order to build a better and brighter tomorrow.

These women are writing their stories, WRITE YOURS!!!!
